Klaus Bernsmann

Klaus Bernsmann (* 1947) is a German legal scholar , university professor and criminal defense attorney .

Life

After the first state examination, Bernsmann received his doctorate in 1978. After the second state examination and his habilitation (1987) he was full professor for criminal law and criminal procedural law at the Ruhr University Bochum .

From 1989 Bernsmann held the chair for criminal law and criminal procedure law at the University of Cologne . At the same time he was managing director of the Criminal Science Institute of the University of Cologne (KWI).

In 2002, Bernsmann returned to the Ruhr-Universität-Bochum and has held the chair for criminal law and criminal procedure law there ever since.

Since the 1980s, Bernsmann has been working as a criminal defense attorney alongside his research and teaching activities.

Bernsmann is an adviser to the magazine “ Strafverteidiger ” and was a founding member of the German Society for Social Psychiatry (“DGSP”) .

Sports

Between 1966 and 1970, Klaus Bernsmann was German judo (lightweight) champion three times. Between 1975 and 1980 he coached the handball women of the UTG Witten in the Bundesliga for five years. He is currently a member of the honorary council ("ethics committee") of FC Schalke 04.
