Narta , formerly also Arta ( Albanian  also  Nartë ; Greek Άρτα Arta or Παλαιοάρτα Paleoarta ) is a village in southern Albania, northwest of Vlora . Since 2015 the place in Qark Vlora  belongs to the Bashkia Vlora, before that it was part of the Komuna Qendër .

geography

The village of Narta in the backlight between the houses of Vlora and the lagoon

The village is located on the sandy plain between the city and the Narta lagoon . It has a compact town center with characteristic houses, a church and a bell tower. Today the village has between 300 and 2000 inhabitants.

The shore of the lagoon is around 500 meters from the edge of the village. The village is already a majority within the 194 square kilometers of protected landscape Vjosa-Narta .

A drainage canal leads from Vlora through the village. A large forest, the Pylli i Sodës, extends south of Narta .

In the north and west, the village is surrounded by the railroad tracks. The Hekurudha Shqiptare never had a train station in the village and no longer operates the route. A private freight company still transports goods on the route. The Autostrada A2  passes the place in the northeast.

Population and history

The village's population is traditionally Orthodox and Greek-speaking . The residents are considered bilingual. It is the northernmost Greek-  inhabited village in Albania. Narta is closely connected with the neighboring town of Zvërnec in the west, which is said to have also been inhabited by Greeks in the past.

Narta is known for its local wine made from the local Vlosh grape . Carnival  - with masks - and Easter are also extensively celebrated in Narta .

In 1873 a Greek school was opened in the village.

In 1927 Narta had 1,392 Orthodox and four Muslim residents.

In 1956 the farmers of Narta were collectivized. The cooperative mainly produced wine, olives and fruits. The village is said to have had 4,000 inhabitants. However, many  emigrated to Greece , so that today only a few 100 inhabitants remain.

economy

In addition to the cultivation of olives and vines as well as the production of wine and raki , fishing is also a source of income in the village. Some wine cellars offer drinks and food. To the north of Narta, salt is extracted from the salt pans in the lagoon .

An oil-fired power plant was built south of Narta on the coast of the Bay of Vlora , although it was never put into operation due to construction defects, despite its completion in 2005.
