Zvërnec ( Albanian  also  Zvërneci ) is a village in southern Albania, northwest of Vlora .

Zvërnec is one of 100 villages in which the Albanian government specifically wants to promote rural tourism .

geography

The place lies on a narrow strip of land, a spit , between the lagoon of Narta in the north and the bay of Vlora in the south. To the west of Zvërnec, the previously around two kilometers wide strip of land narrows to up to 150 meters before it widens again further north.

Treport

The small hill Mali i Golës rises near Zvërnec , which is around 82  m above sea level. A. is high, and another range of hills (hills Pllaka , Dajlan and Limoi , up to 57  m above sea level ) on the south-west coast, which drops in steep cliffs to the Adriatic ( Cape Treport ). They come from the Miocene . In the sandy, otherwise flat soils of the coastal region there are dunes - to the west to Narta and Vlora pine forests have been reforested.

The historical part of the village with an Orthodox church extends on the east side of the main hill directly on the shore of the lagoon. Another district on the south-western side of the hill halfway between the lagoon and the sea coast has seen greater growth in recent years thanks to the emerging tourism .

Beaches stretch from Zvërnec to Vlora, partly interrupted by industrial and port facilities. There are various beach bars here and in Zvërnec there are also some hotels and other tourist accommodation. More beaches can also be found in the west between the hills along the spit. However, some of them have dangerous currents, which is why you should not swim there.

history

Around Zvërnec there are traces of settlement from the Paleolithic , Mesolithic and Neolithic times . On the hill on the seashore was already in the 6th century BC. A fortified settlement was built in BC, which was soon expanded into a small town - often referred to as the Illyrian Daulia . The ancient port city of Treport (often also Triport ) was built around three entrances to the lagoon . The remains found include temples, houses, walls and city towers, some of which are now partly under water in the sea, such as the 250-meter-long quay wall . The port had between the 3rd century BC. BC and the 2nd century BC A great importance also in the surrounding area, the city covered 30 hectares. In the 1st century AD the port had to be abandoned because the natural environment at the mouth of the Vjosa changed. The ancient city of Aulona emerged in Vlora from the 3rd century .

The port facilities, some of which were still used in the Middle Ages under the Anjou , Staufer and local despots of Epirus , were destroyed after the Ottoman invasion in 1417. Material from Treport was used for buildings in Vlora under Ottoman rule . A large area around the historical site has been protected as a cultural monument since 1973 .

During the communist times the village was strongly connected with the neighboring village of Narta . Together they have formed an agricultural cooperative since collectivization in 1956 . As in Narta, the population of Zvërnec used to be - at least partially - Greek .

In 1927 Zvërnec had 261 Orthodox residents. No population figures are available for later, as Zvërnec did not form an independent municipality. The former municipality of Qënder , which was incorporated into the Bashkia Vlora in 2015 , published a population of 1156 people for Zvërnec - but the 2011 census recorded only 42% of the number published in 2008 for the entire municipality of Qënder , which translates into Zvërnec as a population of less than 500 people.

Zvërnec Island and St. Mary's Monastery

The island with the boardwalk that was later broken

In the lagoon northwest of Zvërnec there are two small islands, which together have an area of around seven hectares. The smaller one ( Ishull i Karakonjishtit , 14  m above sea level ) has only sparse vegetation. The larger one ( Ishull i Zvërnecit, 31  m above sea level ) is forested with mighty cypress trees . It has a length of 340 meters, a width of almost 300 meters and is around 250 meters from the shore and is accessed via a wooden walkway.

An Orthodox monastery was founded on the island of Zvërnec in the 13th century . The small St. Mary's Church from the 13th or 14th century is still preserved . Some of the building material comes from Treport. The church has been protected as a cultural monument since 1963.

Behind the church is the tomb of Marigo Posio . Remains of a Trinity Chapel (Shën Triadha) lie on the north-western tip of the island. During the communist period the island was used as an internment camp.

On August 15th ( Assumption of Mary ) a festival is celebrated on the island.
