Bust in Vlora

Marigo Posio (born February 2, 1882 at or in Korça , † February 23, 1932 in Vlora ; sometimes Pozio ) was an activist of the Albanian national and independence movement and women's rights activist. She is considered to be the seamstress of the flag of Albania , which Ismail Qemali hoisted during the Albanian declaration of independence in Vlora on November 28, 1912.

Life

Marigo was the daughter of Papa Kosta Poçi and Lenka Ballauri. Some Albanian sources claim that she was born in the village of Hoçisht near Korça, other sources name Korça itself as the place of birth. Her sister Urani married the Albanian politician and landowner Kristo Floqi , while her sister Angjeliqi married the Albanian politician and later Prime Minister Kostaq Kota . Her brothers Niko and Kristo emigrated to the United States.

Marigo Posio attended the first Albanian school in Korça and was the school's 27th student. She married the future freedom fighter Jovan Posio from the village of Hoçisht at an early age. The couple moved to the Muradie district in Vlorë around 1904 . Her house soon became the central contact point for the Albanian national movement. Marigo Posio was a member of the "Patriotic Club Labëria" founded in 1908 in Vlorë. In 1909 she was one of the founders of the Albanian School of Vlora. Posio taught the Albanian language there on the pretext of giving sewing lessons.

The flag that was raised in Vlore during the Albanian declaration of independence on November 28, 1912 is said to have been sewn by Marigo Posio. The Albanian politician Lef Nosi reported that the black double-headed eagle had been cut out of black satin and sewn onto red fabric. However, Ekrem Bey Vlora said that on Independence Day his flag, a gift from Aladro Castriota , was hoisted and that Posio only then made flags based on this template:

“I was promised that they would put it back in a few days, as soon as Ms. Marigo Posio (a tall, advertising, democratic patriot from Korçë) had finished sewing and embroidering the new flag. On November 28th, with that typically Albanian-Oriental carelessness, the main object of the day, "the flag" as a symbol of sovereignty, was forgotten. Most of them had no idea what this flag looked like. No one had ever seen or used them. Nobody owned one in Vlorë. The great founders of the state looked at each other helplessly. Then my friend Hydai Efendi stepped forward and reported that in Ekrem Bey's bedroom an Albanian flag was nailed to a beautiful frame on the bed wall. He asked if it could be taken in spite of the owner's absence. Ismail Bey consented, and so the flag that Don Aladro Kastriota had given me in Paris went into the hands of Ismail Bey in the next house of the Konak, who handed it to Murat Bey Toptani with the command to hoist it while he was standing by the window. "

Other sources write that a flag made in the United States and smuggled from Corfu into Albania by Marigo Posio was hoisted .

Posio undoubtedly made several copies of the flag that hung in the offices of the new government.

Marigo Posio was also one of the leaders of the first Albanian women’s organization to help wounded soldiers from the war with Greece. The organization was founded on May 13, 1914. The members included many wives of prominent Albanian personalities such as Syrja Vlora or Mehmet Pascha .

On February 6, 1921, Posio founded the newspaper Shpresa shqiptare ("The Albanian Hope"), which appeared in six issues.

Posio's family was unlucky. The son and two of the three daughters died. In the 1920s, Marigo Posio also developed tuberculosis . For a long time she was denied fame: unlike many others, Posio did not receive "veteran status" and was forgotten. She died in 1932 and was buried in the cemetery of the Zvërnec monastery .

Posthumous honor

Today in Vlora there is a statue of Marigo Posio in a small park on Vlora's main street, Rruga Sadik Zotaj .
