Klaus Botta (born May 21, 1959 in Bamberg ) is a German industrial designer . He gained notoriety through the development of the one-hand wristwatch and triggered a trend that was followed by other one-hand models from other manufacturers.

Life

Klaus Botta, born in Bamberg in 1959 , first studied technical physics at the University of Bayreuth , then product design and industrial design at the Offenbach am Main University of Design . During his studies, he completed design internships at Adam Opel AG and Albrecht Graf von Goertz (designer of the BMW 507 ). Klaus Botta realized his diploma thesis - a digital hi-fi system - in 1989 in cooperation with Grundig AG . For the watch manufacturer Junghans he designed in 1991, the Solar1, the first solar watch by Junghans. The design office Botta Design, based in Königstein im Taunus , which Klaus Botta founded during his studies, develops product design for technical devices (audio and video technology, measurement technology, information technology, robot construction and office equipment).

Development of the one-hand wristwatch

UNO one-hand watch

In addition to the drafting and development work of his design office for companies such as Grundig AG , Volkswagen AG or Siemens AG , Botta Design focuses on the development and sale of wristwatches. In 1986 Klaus Botta developed the world's first wristwatch with a single-pointer display. With the special scale he designed, the dial is divided into 5-minute steps, similar to the display of a precise measuring instrument. The time is still clearly legible and comparable to the display on a speedometer in a car. The aim of the development of the one-hand watch was to simplify and reduce the complexity of the wristwatch display. In the early 1990s, Klaus Botta convinced the then owner of the watch brand Watchpeople and later founder of MeisterSinger Manfred Brassler of the concept of the one-hand wristwatch. From 1994 he marketed the UNO one-hand watch. It developed into Watchpeople's best-selling watch and sparked a trend that was followed by other single-hand models from other manufacturers. After the rights of use at the UN fell back to Klaus Botta in 1999, he made the decision to sell the wristwatches he had designed and developed under his own name. In the same year, the company founded its own watch brand, Botta Design. In the meantime, Klaus Botta has sold well over 100,000 UNO items. Klaus Botta has also designed clocks with multiple hands. According to a message from the Alliance of German Designers , Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. a Botta wristwatch.
