Klaus Hofmann (musicologist)

Klaus Hofmann (born March 20, 1939 in Würzburg ) is a German musicologist . In publications he often uses the addition Herbipol to his name . (from Latin herbipolensis "from Würzburg"). The focus of his research is on the works of Johann Sebastian Bach .

Life

After graduating from high school (1958), Hofmann studied at the University of Erlangen from 1958 to 1959 . He then continued his studies at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . In 1968 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the subject of "Investigations into the composition technique of the motet in the 13th century, carried out on the motets with the tenor IN SECULUM". From 1968 to 1978 he worked as an employee of the Hänssler publishing house, also as an editor for the Carus publishing house . In 1978 he became a research assistant at the Johann Sebastian Bach Institute in Göttingen , which co-edited the New Bach Edition until 2006 . In 1981 he became deputy director and full-time director of the institute, and in 2004 he was appointed director. He was a board member of the collecting society Musikedition . In 1991 he was one of the founding members of the International Telemann Society. In 1994 he was appointed honorary professor at the Georg-August University of Göttingen . In 2006 he retired.

Awards

Klaus Hofmann was awarded the Georg Philipp Telemann Prize of the City of Magdeburg in 2019 for his commitment to the scientific development and processing of the works of Georg Philipp Telemann . In recognition of his services, especially as a long-standing member of the administrative board (executive board), Klaus Hofmann was appointed honorary member of the collecting society (VG) Musikedition on June 18, 2019.
