Klaus Lederer (born May 12, 1942 in Kalwang ; † August 30, 2009 there ) was a chemist who mainly dealt with polymers and taught at the Montan University Leoben .

biography

After graduating from the secondary school in Leoben (Styria), Klaus Lederer studied with Josef Schurz and Otto Kratky at the University of Graz and initially specialized in small-angle X-ray scattering on high polymers . After completing his studies, he became department head for X-ray and structural research at the Institute for Macromolecular Chemistry at the Technical University of Darmstadt , and in 1975 he completed his habilitation in macromolecular chemistry at the Montan University Leoben . From 1974 he was a university assistant, from 1982 to 1989 head of the department for chemistry of plastics at the Institute for Chemical and Physical Technology of Plastics, then head of the newly founded Institute for Chemistry of Plastics, in the establishment and expansion of which he played a decisive role. In 1997 he was appointed full university professor for chemistry of plastics. In a difficult phase of the institute, after the retirement of older colleagues, he was the only professor in all of plastics technology and managed to keep the institute, which was involved in many groundbreaking developments.

In the last few years of his activity, albeit seriously ill, Lederer has earned merit through his work in the Polymer Competence Center Leoben , his teaching activities and the establishment of the compounding laboratory. He played a leading role in the establishment of a so-called “preferred professorship” for the synthesis of specialty and functional polymers. The work in the compounding laboratory kept him busy even after his retirement.

Lederer died on August 30, 2009 and was buried a week later in Kalwang, where Primarius Hellmut Lederer, his father, had headed the well-known accident hospital from 1929 to 1966 .
