The Polymer Competence Center Leoben GmbH (PCCL) is an Austrian, university-related and cooperative research company in the field of plastics technology and polymer science . It is located in Leoben , in the Impulse Center for Materials  (IZW) directly on the campus of the Montan University Leoben .

history

The PCCL was established in 2002 as part of the Kplus competence center program . It has been a K1 center in the COMET program since 2010.

Grants

Since 2009 the PCCL has been funded as a "K1" center as part of the COMET competence center program. Upper Austria focuses on lightweight construction and energy , Styria on automobility in Graz and materials in Leoben. In the PCCL area , € 20 million in funding is to be invested over the next few years. The revenue development of Comet including non-Comet sales shows a steady increase from € 4.5 million in 2010 to € 8 million in 2013.

Cooperations

Partner companies within the meaning of the COMET funding program are companies that solve project-specific problems together with the PCCL and participate in the financing of the research program. These partners include engineering offices, small and medium-sized enterprises and global players from a wide variety of sectors in the plastics industry.

In addition to these partners, the PCCL speaks to many companies in the participating industries as sponsors, e.g. B. for colloquia and events and maintains networks around materials science , plastics technology , nanotechnologies , carbon fiber-plastic composites , simulation of process technologies , solar technology and the Autocluster Styria .

More applied research and development (R&D) in materials science is conducted at the same address at the Materials Center Leoben .

Activity and fields of work

The purpose of the PCCL is to organize long-term cooperation between companies and the technical universities in Austria and to network research with the requirements of industry as well as small and medium-sized enterprises and to develop applicable products and processes.

Research fields

In the predominantly application-oriented research of the PCCL, the properties of plastics such as hardness, elasticity, surface properties , conductivity or weight are optimized for certain functions and the tools necessary for their production are developed. This is particularly important in the development of lightweight structural components and innovative functional materials in the automotive industry , aviation industry , packaging industry , solar technology and increasing efficiency in electrical engineering , high voltage technology and electronics, as well as for alternative energy generation using polymer-based materials. The PCCL's offer for science and industry is divided into the following areas:

For example, a test tool was developed to check the surface quality of products - or an "artificial eye", a camera that enables the characterization of surface phenomena.

The approximately 100 employed research assistants, master's students or doctoral students who carry out this research earn from around € 28,000 to € 38,000 per year and have obtained 19 patents, 56 dissertations, 125 diploma / master's theses and 127 baccalaureate theses in the period 2002 to 2013 202 publications and 538 conference papers published.

The staff structure is: 40% scientists, 26% students, 15% post-doc researchers, 13% technicians, 6% administration.
