Klaus Otte (theologian)

Paul Adolf Klaus Otte (born January 14, 1935 in Wuppertal ; † April 28, 2020 in Altenkirchen (Westerwald) ) was a German Protestant theologian .

Live and act

Otte studied theology at the Kirchliche Hochschule Wuppertal and at the universities of Heidelberg, Bonn and Basel. In 1968 he obtained his doctorate with a dissertation on Philo of Alexandria . In 1984 Otte was appointed professor at the Near East School of Theology in Beirut . From 1989 to 1991 he was on behalf of the Swiss East Asia Mission head of the "House of Encounters" founded by Werner Kohler in Kyoto . There Otte also taught as a visiting professor at the Christian Dōshisha University and at Kansei Gakuin Daigaku in Kobe .

After 1991, as a pastor, Otte tried to make interreligious dialogue an issue in a rural community in Germany. For this he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 1999 .
