Klaus Peter Schmitz (born March 20, 1944 in Schwelm ; † January 8, 2020 there ) was a German author and local history researcher .

Life

Schmitz grew up in a handicraft family, attended the Collegium Heerde in Münster and the local high school as a boarding school student . He worked as an electrician until heart disease forced him to give up his job.

Schmitz turned to the local history of Schwelm and with “Aechte de Muer” he published his first self-published book on the history of a Schwelm district. In addition, he volunteered to lead the senior citizens' group in his home community, the St. Marien Provostry in Schwelm, and revised the provost's archives. This resulted in a story of the Propsteigemeinde St. Marien, which appeared in 2008. The diocese of Essen awarded him the honorary badge of the diocese. In 2012 he - himself a Kolping member - published a story of the Schwelm Kolping family .

Finally, Schmitz researched the Nazi years of the 20th century in Schwelm. In addition to the documents and newspapers of the Schwelm City Archives, the basis of his research into the National Socialism was still existing family records from the Nazi era and his extensive private collection. For his book "The Era of National Socialism in Schwelm" he was honored in 2014 by the Wilhelm Erfurt Foundation for Nature and Culture and honored with the CDU Schwelm Citizens' Prize. In 2014 he published his autobiographical memories with “Ut dä Blagentied”. With his study “Mitten in der Zeit” in 2015 he wrote the history of the Christian Democrats in Schwelm from the post-war period to reunification. In addition, he published numerous articles on regional history. He was working on a story of the immediate post-war period in Schwelm.

Services to the Schwelm city archive

In January 2016, his rescue operation of valuable archives in the Schwelm City Archives from destruction caused a sensation. A round table was convened by Mayor Gabriele Grollmann , who was newly elected in 2015 , to clarify grievances in the archive and to find an amicable solution for the future of the city archive.
