Klaus Staehler

Klaus Peter Stähler (born February 15, 1939 in Dortmund ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Klaus Stähler studied classical archeology, classical philology and art history between 1958 and 1963 . He completed his studies in 1963 with a doctorate on The Unclassical in the Telephos Frieze. The friezes of the Pergamon Altar as part of the Hellenistic sculpture at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . There he was then involved as curator from 1965 to 1994 with the development of an archaeological teaching collection. In 1975 he also became a lecturer at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , and later at the Münster Art Academy . In 1980 he completed his habilitation and in 1980/81 he was the archaeological professor at the University of Hamburg . In 1982 Stähler became professor for archeology at the University of Münster. In 1995 he founded the research project The Greeks and their Neighbors . Since 1999 he has also participated in German-Russian excavations on the Taman Peninsula . Between 2000 and 2002 he worked on the Collaborative Research Center Functions of Religion in the Ancient Societies of the Middle East of the German Research Foundation . In 2004 Stähler retired.

Stähler has been co-editor of the trade journal Boreas since 1984 and of the Eikon series since 1992 . Contributions to ancient imagery . Research stays took him to the USA, where he was the holder of the America Scholarship of the German Archaeological Institute , as well as to China and Japan on the occasion of studies on the Silk Road . Stähler primarily deals with Greek vase painting and ancient sculpture. The Münster Art Academy awarded Stähler an honorary doctorate in 2001 .
