The nuthatches ( Sitta ) are a genus of songbirds that are the only genus of the Sittidae family in the system presented here .
Nuthatches are small climbing birds with a powerful pecker. They live on trees and rocks. They are local cave breeders that are found in North America and Eurasia. It was not until 1976 that the Kabylenkleiber was discovered, which occurs at a relic location in the Lesser Kabylia in northern Algeria and thus settles in a region where the Kleiber was not suspected.
The nests of the nuthatch species are in tree hollows or in cracks in the rock, which they repair with plant material. The entrances are often closed with clay or made smaller. They eat invertebrates and plant seeds. Males and females are colored similarly.

Some authors also include the genus Tichodroma , which is the only species containing the wall creeper ( T. muraria ), to the family of nuthatches. According to the current presentation (2018) of the International Ornithological Union (IOU) , this genus is listed as a separate family Tichodromidae. Both genera are genetically very close in any case.
