features

The bugs are 3.5 to 4.8 millimeters long. They have a rust-colored body and look very similar to the birch bug ( Kleidocerys resedae ). However, they are somewhat smaller than the similar species and drawn somewhat differently: The pale areas on the scutellum are usually larger in K. ericae and it also has fewer dark spots on the corium of the hemielytras .

distribution and habitat

The species is predominantly Mediterranean, but reaches the Netherlands and England to the north in the west and the area around Lake Neusiedl in the east . It is also found in North Africa.

Way of life

The animals live on the heather family (Ericaceae), such as B. Heather ( Calluna vulgaris ) and heather ( Erica ). In the Mediterranean region, it is mainly found on tree heather ( Erica arborea ). They suck on the seeds and immature generative parts. With good temperature conditions, two generations occur per year and the older nymphs can hibernate in addition to the adults .
