Small old castle

The Little Old Castle , and Castle Reifenstein called, is a Outbound medieval hilltop castle in Reifenstein in the municipality Niederorschel in the district Eichsfeld in Thuringia .

location

Not far from the old castle above Reifenstein is the former castle complex south of Kleinbartloff on the thin plateau . The exact location was deliberately not published so far in order to prevent further destruction. Due to the low findings in the soil, this castle location was also initially questioned.

history

More recent ceramic finds in 1971 refer to a castle in the 12th century. The castle area has been severely changed due to weathering and requires further investigation. The castle (Reifenstein?) Could have been built around 1100 and already existed when the Reifenstein monastery was founded in 1162 and served as the residence of the Counts of Gleichen . The counts donate the neighboring Mittelberg, part of the Sonder and the Burghagen with the location of the "Old Castle" to the monastery. The former village of Albolderode in the valley was now called villa riphenstein . In armed conflicts around the year 1200 between King Philip of Swabia and the anti-king Otto IV, numerous monasteries and places in Thuringia were destroyed. This castle could also have been affected because traces of fire were found, the nearby monastery was demonstrably affected. In 1209, Count von Velsecke testified that he had to rebuild the destroyed monastery. Since he could not raise the sum of money, he pledged land in Beberstedt and another part of the special forest to the monastery .

The castle could have been used to monitor an old trunk road from Mühlhausen across the Dün to the north. It is not known to what extent this castle was connected to Birkenstein Castle, which was only a few kilometers away and was built after 1200 . Possibly this is to be regarded as a successor building by the Count von Gleichen, as the ownership structure at the previous location near Reifenstein was no longer sufficient.
