Leonidas is an ambitious young police officer whose office - to his chagrin - is on the small Greek island of Thirasia . While the idiosyncratic, but definitely lovable inhabitants praise the beauty and the peaceful tranquility of the island , Leonidas longs for his transfer to Athens , where he wants to solve the big criminal cases. On Thirasia, however , all that remains for him is to warn harmless traffic offenders who, due to the lack of traffic in the small idyll, could not harm anyone anyway, or to monitor the ban on nude bathing on the lonely beach. But then suddenly Leonidas sees his big fall coming when one day the body of the lonely Zacharias is found on a steep slope . Leonidas immediately begins the investigation and initially has the body stored in a freezer for safekeeping.

The police commander, as well as the only doctor on Thirasia, refuse an autopsy , since of course only an accident is the cause of death. This is how the other islanders see it. Leonidas, however, does not give up his theory of murder and begins to question the residents of the site. He meets the young TV presenter Angeliki, the daughter of one of the potential witnesses and pride of the whole island, who had recently received an award for her TV show. It soon turns out that she is the illegitimate daughter of the deceased.

Together they go into the background of Zacharias' death and fall in love with each other - the villagers are already happy about the young couple before they are even aware of their feelings. The investigation quickly brings to light numerous possible motives for murder, which Leonidas' criminalistic mind processes into crime sequences that are shown in the film as short overlays. These range from suicide , the revenge of a spurned love and a quarrel with the doctor who, as a councilor, is targeting the property of Zacharias, to the conspiracy theory depicting Zacharias as the victim of a US military command.

His commanding officer doesn't want to know anything about it. When an unexpected fax sent the approval for Leonidas' transfer, Leonidas immediately breaks off his residence. At the last minute, however, his feelings for Angeliki hold him back and he stays. He continues his research with his companion. In the end, however, the sworn village community has the upper hand - unaffected by the fact that almost everyone spies on the other with binoculars and, as a result, everyone keeps their little secrets. The case is closed with the solemn funeral of Zacharias. Rightly, as Leonidas finds out in the end, when he accidentally suffers the same accident as Zacharias, but survives it without any problems.

Reviews

  • Critic.de writes about the film: A not unsympathetic film, no question; too cautiously staged to be kitschy - but also too cautiously to ever get going.
  • kino-zeit judges: Christos Georgiou has succeeded in creating an entertaining Greek comedy with Kleine Verbrechen, which, however, does not stay in the memory for long. [...] Many of the ideas are really successful, invite you to smile and ensure cheerfulness, but the real highlights and unforgettable scenes are missing. [...] The bottom line is that petty crimes are an amusing cinema experience that sets the mood for the next vacation in Greece.
  • Spiegel online draws the conclusion: “Small crimes” is not the great masterpiece that could win the Oscar for the best foreign film. But the perfect film for the summer, that's it.
