The little knotweed is an annual herbaceous plant . The prostrate to ascending stem usually reaches heights of between 15 and 30 cm. The leaves are almost attached to the stem and are linear to linear lanceolate in shape. They are mostly 3 to 8 mm wide, mostly with a rounded base, with little change in width up to the middle of the leaf. Leaf veins are usually only indistinctly present. The stipple sheaths are hairy and long ciliate (2 to 5 mm).

The false spikes usually grow upright, with the flowers being purple or white in color. The bracts are glandless. The shiny black nuts are about 1.5 to 2.5 mm long.

The flowering period extends essentially from July to October.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 40.

Locations and distribution

The little knotweed grows on banks, ditches and damp paths. It prefers wet, nutrient-rich and lime-free soils. Its distribution area includes Europe to Central Asia, Siberia and the Far East of Russia. In Germany, the species occurs scattered throughout the area, but it is particularly present in the silicate areas. In the Alps it rises to an altitude of 750 m. The small knotweed is rare in Austria, while it can be found scattered in Switzerland. It is a character species of the Polygonetum minori-hydropiperis from the association Bidention.
