Small pounel tower

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Small Pounellen or Paunell Tower was a defensive tower of the outer city wall of the city of Aachen, which was built between 1300 and 1350 . It is no longer preserved.

location

The small pounell tower stood in the south of the outer wall ring between the marching gate and the rostor . There was no other tower between the Small Pounell Tower and the Marschiertor, while the Large Pounell Tower and the Karlsturm were built between the Small Pounell Tower and the Rostor .

The Small Pounell Tower stood roughly in the middle between the Marschiertor and the Large Pounell Tower, which in today's urban geography corresponds to a location on the Boxgraben in the middle between Marschiertor and Karmeliterstraße. In old cityscapes, on the other hand, the Small Pounell Tower is often wrongly moved close to the Large Pounell Tower.

Like its big neighbor, the tower got its name from the Paunell brook , which at that time ran above ground and flowed under the Great Pounell Tower.

history

The construction date of the small Pounell tower is not known, it was first mentioned in a document in 1696. The tower was demolished at the end of the 18th century.

description

The plan of the Small Pounell Tower was in the shape of a semicircle with straight ends. It had a width of 10.60 m and a depth of 7.20 m. The building was only one-story with a semicircular vault that merged into a barrel vault over the extension of the semicircle. The circular wall had three loopholes , two on the side facing the ditch and the third from the center towards the marching gate.

The roof consisted of half a cone roof and then turned into a gable roof . The top of the conical roof was adorned with a sphere.
