Cleomenes of Naukratis
Cleomenes of Naukratis (* Naukratis ; † 322 BC ) was born in 331 BC. Chr. By Alexander the great after taking over the rule in Egypt with the "management of the finance and tax system [... and] the construction management of Alexandreia entrusted". He was also used as administrator of the " Arabia at Heroonpolis ", the Egyptian border district east of the Nile Delta . Since this area was of military importance, Kleomenes was also in command of the troops stationed there.
As the construction manager of Alexandria, he was supposed to relocate the residents of Canopus there. At first he left her unmolested in exchange for a large sum of money. However, when the construction of the city was coming to an end, he asked for a sum they could not raise and thus got them to move. He even capitalized on the death of his son. When he was killed by a crocodile , he ordered the sacred animal to be killed too. The priesthood was able to change his mind with a large amount of money. He also did not hesitate to take possession of the temple treasure.
"During [.. Alexander's] absence in India, his Greek finance inspector Cleomenes from Naukratis usurped the satrap position in Egypt, shamelessly enriched himself, in particular through the monopoly of wheat exports, and surrounded himself with mercenaries."
Alexander, from whom this was not hidden, let him in 323 BC. BC know that he would let it go if Cleomenes built a splendid Heroon for Hephaistion .
After the death of Alexander, Cleomenes became the Hyparch (military commander) of Egypt. When he sided with Perdiccas , he was executed by Ptolemy I , leaving him 8,000 talents of silver.
