The Climate Collection is a CO 2 compensation fund run by Christian churches through which individuals, organizations and communities can offset unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions. With the compensation payments, the organization finances emission-reducing projects that are also intended to make a contribution to reducing poverty. The projects are carried out by church organizations or their partner organizations in developing countries.

history

The Klima-Kollekte was founded in 2011 after preliminary work and has been offering compensation services since May 2011. The main focus was and is on services for church institutions, but the services were also available to non-church people and organizations from the start. The Klima-Kollekte office initially started its work in Bonn , and in October 2012 (together with the Evangelical Development Service (EED)) it moved to Berlin. The head office in Berlin is in the house of the shareholder Bread for the World . The management and the shareholders' meeting lead and are responsible for the climate collection and, after consulting a technical committee, decide on the selection of emission-reducing projects. Scientific support is provided by the research facility of the Evangelical Study Community (FEST).

Goal of the organization

In order to keep the damage to the climate as low as possible, the climate collection sensitizes individuals, organizations and communities with regard to the topic of climate protection and works according to the triad "Avoid - Reduce - Compensate". Accordingly, prior to offsetting the unavoidable CO 2 emissions, the focus is on advice on first avoiding and saving emissions.

On the website of the Klima-Kollekte, emissions from the areas of energy, mobility, events, paper and printing as well as website operation can be determined with the help of an emissions calculator. The calculator then shows an amount that can be used to support climate protection projects of church organizations or their partners. The calculated amount of money includes the amount that the partner organizations of the Klima-Kollekte need to save the same amount of CO 2 emissions in their climate protection projects in developing and emerging countries. There is also a share of administrative costs. In 2016, of the compensation amount of 23 euros per tonne of CO 2, 19 euros was used for climate protection projects, 2.50 euros for administrative costs and 1.50 euros for a small project fund.

In 2018, a total of € 876,013 was collected for CO 2 compensation, around two thirds of the payments came from church institutions and shareholders. Around 46% were used to offset air travel. The expenditure for financing climate protection projects totaled € 984,933.70, of which € 39,071.70 went to the micro-project fund. For the entire period 2011–2018, the income amounted to around 3,200,000 €, of which almost 2,500,000 € were spent on buying up CO 2 certificates. In total, the organization offset 129,200 t CO 2 during the period .

Projects

The climate collection compensation projects support either the expansion of renewable energies or the increase in energy efficiency. The projects serve to protect the climate and combat poverty on site. In this way, the projects should always contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) defined by the United Nations .

The Climate Collection aims to combine climate protection and development cooperation by the following projects:

  • build village structures in rural areas of the global south
  • Strengthening women as small entrepreneurs in the village community
  • promote health, save energy and time as well
  • Support partner organizations in setting up social enterprises that contribute to financial independence.

To ensure this, the selection and implementation of the projects is based on the Gold Standard (CER) and takes into account both the contribution to emission savings and sustainable development. The Gold Standard is a quality standard for projects of the Clean Development Mechanism , which was developed by environmental and development experts. Its purpose is to ensure that the certificates generated in this way and introduced into the regulated emissions trading system meet high standards.

This is to ensure that the projects:

  • actually contribute to climate protection,
  • take place in addition to other climate protection efforts,
  • have no negative effects on the environment and local development and
  • support sustainable development and poverty reduction locally.

The following projects are currently (November 2019) funded:

  • Renewable energies with biogas in India
  • Energy efficient stoves in India
  • Energy-efficient stoves and clean drinking water with water filters in Rwanda
  • Energy efficient cooking zones in India
  • Energy-efficient cooking bags in Cameroon
  • Solar lamps in India
  • Renewable energies with biogas in India
  • Energy saving stoves in Bangladesh

In addition, the Klima-Kollekte has so far supported five small projects in which the criteria of the Gold Standard are met with start-up funding:

  • Energy efficient stoves in Tanzania
  • Energy-efficient cooking areas in Nicaragua
  • Energy efficient stoves in Lesotho
  • Renewable energies with biogas in Cuba
  • Renewable energies in Myanmar

structure

The Klima-Kollekte is organized as a non-profit GmbH . As of 2019, shareholders are
