The Aulnay Monastery (Notre-Dame d'Aunay) is a former Cistercian monk abbey in France . It is located around 29 km southwest of Caen in the municipality of Aunay-sur-Odon in the Calvados department , Normandy region . The place must not be confused with other places with the same or similar name ( Aulnay-de-Saintogne ; Aulnay-sous-Bois ).

history

Founded in 1131 by the du Hommet family, the monastery belonged to the Congregation of Savigny . With this it joined the Cistercian Order in 1147 and submitted to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . Aulnay Monastery was the foundation of the subsidiaries of La Boulaye Monastery , Croxden Abbey in England (Val-Ste-Marie) and Torigny Monastery . The church was consecrated in 1190. The monastery recovered only with difficulty from looting in 1528 and 1540. In the following period it fell into the coming period , which lasted until 1635. The monastery was rebuilt in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It was dissolved in the French Revolution in 1791.

Buildings and plant

From the monastery, which was largely destroyed in 1944, the guest wing, which was extended at the beginning of the 20th century, still stands. Part of the refectory wing and the post-medieval library have also been preserved. Parts of a side wall of the original church are still preserved. The buildings now serve as a cheese dairy.
