The Belleau (Belle Eau) Monastery is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Villeneuve-la-Lionne in the Marne department , Grand Est region , in France , around 15 km southwest of Montmirail (Marne) .
history
The monastery was founded as a nunnery by Matthieu de Montmirail in 1242. In 1510 the abbey was converted into a priory and settled with Cistercians ( primary abbey : Morimond ). In 1768 the monastery still had a monk. It came to an end during the French Revolution at the latest .
Buildings and plant
The 13th century church was enlarged in the 15th century and is the only remnant of the monastery. The ship has been converted into a barn, and one of the transepts was used for residential purposes. The choir and apse are in ruins.
