Cambron Monastery (Camberona) is a former Cistercian monk abbey in Belgium . It is located in Cambron-Casteau in the municipality of Brugelette in the province of Hainaut on the Blanche river, a tributary of the Dender (Dendre), around 9 km southeast of Ath .
history
The monastery was founded in 1148 by Anselme de Trazegines, a canon from Soignies . It is said to have been founded by Bernhard von Clairvaux . It was thus probably a daughter monastery of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey and one of the wealthiest monasteries in Hainaut. After joining the Cistercian order, the Boudelo monastery was subordinated to the Cambron monastery . At the end of the 14th century, Cambron Abbey had 70 monks. In the 18th century it was rebuilt after being destroyed. The dissolution took place in 1789, probably under Joseph II , but did not take effect until 1797 due to the events of the war. The monastery was then sold to the Counts of Val de Beaulieu, who owned it until 1993, when it was sold to the current owners of the Parc Pairi Daiza . In 1982 it was listed as a historical monument.
Plant and buildings
The tower of the monastery church from 1774, a monumental staircase from 1776, the completely preserved medieval monastery wall and a cellar from the 13th century under the former Konversenbau measuring 12 × 18 m with twelve pointed vaults and the monastery gate have been preserved from 1722 and the monastery property with a carriage shed from the 18th century. The area was first used as a bird park, now as a zoo. Remains of the old abbey church are kept in Attre Castle. A Cambron grangie has been preserved in Bermeries near Bavay in France . There are other monastery courtyards at Diksmuide , Rosière, Thiennes, Horrues, Wodecq, Rebais, Lombise and Stoppeldijk.
