Gethsemani Monastery

Gethsemani Monastery is a Trappist monastery with the rank of Grand Priory on the Donnersberg near Dannenfels in the Palatinate .

history

It was founded in 1984 by two nuns from the Maria Frieden (Dahlem) abbey . The monastery was incorporated into the Trappist Order in 2003 when the Altbronn Abbey was founded . The abbot of Echt was the abbot of the monastery from the beginning . Long-time prioress of the monastery is Sister Magdalena König OCSO, who was confirmed in office on March 21, 2018 for an indefinite period.

Prayer times and activities

The focus of monastic life is worship and the office of the hour . Special emphasis is placed on Eucharistic adoration and nocturnal prayer. This is how the prayer times shape and structure the course of the day:

  • from 3:00 a.m. nightly adoration
  • 3.45 a.m. Vigil
  • 7:00 am Laudes , then around 7:30 am Eucharistic celebration; on Saturdays 8.30 a.m. Eucharistic celebration
  • 8:30 a.m. third (Sundays 8:45 a.m.)
  • 12:00 p.m. Sext (Sundays 11:30 a.m.)
  • 2.00 p.m. Non (Sundays 2.30 p.m.)
  • 5:00 p.m. Vespers , then contemplation (on Sundays after Vespers, Eucharistic Adoration)
  • 7:00 p.m. Compline .

In order to earn a living, the nuns work in a parament embroidery and tailoring, a bookbinding , make candles and run a monastery shop. They also do gardening and housework.

In 2006 there were six nuns living in Gethsemani Monastery.
