The Heilig-Geist-Spital is now a retirement and nursing home in Landshut, Lower Bavaria, in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising . It used to be used as a hospital and at times also as a monastery. It is located at the northern end of the old town opposite the late Gothic Holy Spirit Church directly on the Holy Spirit Bridge over the Isar .

history

The Heilig-Geist-Spital first appeared in a document in 1208, just four years after Landshut was founded. At that time it was still outside the city and was only incorporated into the wall ring with the last medieval city expansion in 1350. From the beginning, the hospital was responsible for nursing the sick and the elderly as well as for the poor in Landshut. From 1232 to 1252 it was united with the Seligenthal monastery . In 1270 it is said to have been occupied by Bishop Konrad II of Freising by brothers of the Holy Spirit Order from Munich , but the hospital convention was dissolved again in the 14th century . The structural condition of the hospital in the early modern era is clear from the city model by Jakob Sandtner from 1571. You can see three elongated buildings with pointed gables.

These were almost completely demolished in 1722, only individual Gothic pillars and vaults have been preserved. The new baroque building at the same location was completed by 1728. It was created by the court mason Johann Georg Hirschstötter together with the town mason Martin Ehehamb.

In accordance with its purpose, the Heilig-Geist-Spitalstiftung still operates an old people's and nursing home with 116 beds, 28 of which are in two-bed rooms.

description

The three-storey, four-wing hipped roof structure extends around a closed, rectangular inner courtyard. In the rear part, some outbuildings of the Gothic predecessor building are still preserved. The sundial from 1728 on the street front is framed by a painted mercy seat. In the east wing there is the house chapel or Elisabeth chapel , a rectangular room with three bays with a needle cap barrel . The equipment will include Wenzeslaus Jorhan and Christian Jorhan the Elder. Ä. attributed. The baroque altar dates from 1728, but the original altar sheet is lost. It was replaced by a baroque altarpiece with a depiction of the baptism of Christ , which probably comes from a side altar of the former hospital church. In the west wing there is another chapel, the sick chapel , which also has a baroque altar. Today it is used as a funeral room.
