Kalbe Monastery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The monastery of St. Laurentius was a nunnery in the 10th century, probably in Kalbe in the Altmark in today's Saxony-Anhalt .

location

The monastery was in a place Calvo in the diocese of Halberstadt . Probably this was Kalbe an der Milde, where there were field names Lorenzkirchhof and Nonnenwerder . However, another location with this name, which is not known, would also be possible.

history

There are only two brief mentions of the monastery in Thietmar von Merseburg and in the founding deed for the Augustinian Canon Monastery of Schöningen west of the Altmark.

The monastery was founded by an Oda , probably Oda von Haldensleben , daughter of Margrave Dietrich der Nordmark . She was kidnapped from a monastery in 977 and then married the Polish prince Mieszko. In 983 the monastery was destroyed in an attack by the Abodrites . The further fate is unknown, it may have been moved to Schöningen, because in 1121 when the Augustiner Canons Monastery was founded, extensive free float of the former monastery Kalbe in numerous villages west and north of Magdeburg and near Gardelegen was transferred to the new monastery.
