The monastery of La Boissière is a former Cistercian abbey in France .

location

The former abbey is located on the southern edge of the municipality of Dénezé-sous-le-Lude in the Maine-et-Loire department in the Pays de la Loire region , around 22 km east of Baugé , on the banks of the Marconne stream.

history

The monastery, founded in 1131, belonged to the Congregation of Savigny . With this it came to the Cistercian Order in 1147 and submitted to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . It received numerous privileges from the Counts of Anjou . In 1244 the monastery received a particle of the Holy Cross from Jean d'Alluye , which he had received from the Bishop of Hierapietra in Crete , and from which the Lorraine Cross later developed (today in Baugé ). In the 18th century, the monastery was almost completely rebuilt in line with the taste of the time, but the west wing (initially the converse wing, since the 16th century the apartment of the commander abbots) has been preserved in an earlier state. During the French Revolution, the monastery was dissolved in 1790. Today it is privately owned.

Buildings and plant

The choir of the church from the 12th century has been preserved ( Monument historique ). It has a semicircular apse with five windows and an altar from the 17th century. The nave and cloister were destroyed in 1795. Traces of two rectangular chapels that opened to the transept are still preserved. The three-bay Gothic foreign chapel (Chapelle de la Vraie Croix) from 1246 has also been preserved.
