The Monastery of La Frenade (Frenada) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Merpins in the Charente department , Nouvelle-Aquitaine region , in France , on the slopes of the river , which flows not far below into the Charente , around 6 km southwest of Cognac .

history

La Frenade Abbey

The monastery was founded in 1140 with the support of the Lords of Cognac, came to the Cistercian order in 1151 and was subordinate to the Obazine (Aubazine) monastery , which had joined the Cistercian order a few years earlier. Thus it belonged to the filiation of the Cîteaux monastery . The monastery was devastated in the Huguenot Wars in the 16th century and was then in a deplorable condition. When it was dissolved, it counted only one monk. During the French Revolution , the monastery came to an end in 1791.

Buildings and plant

Renaissance portal

Insignificant ruins have been preserved from the church, namely part of the nave wall from the 12th century. The remains of the chapter house date from the 16th century and are more significant. The three openings are ogival and have recently been restored. Two columns and the vaults of the chapter house no longer date from the time it was founded. A staircase with a Renaissance portal leads to the former dormitory . Excavations have uncovered some floor tiles.
