The monastery Les Écharlis (sometimes also Les Écharlis; Scarleiae) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Villefranche-Saint Phal in the Yonne department , Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region , in France . It is about 24 km west of Joigny .
history
The monastery emerged from a hermitage founded between 1115 and 1120 by Vivien, knight of La Ferté-Loupière, which joined the Cistercian order in 1131 as the first subsidiary of Fontenay monastery and thus belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . Due to lack of water, the monastery was moved from Le Vieux-Echarlis to another location a few kilometers further west on the bank of a stream in 1136. The monastery, which was rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries, probably came to an end during the French Revolution in 1791. The monastery church was then demolished.
Buildings and plant
Some arcades of the cloister from the 12th century as well as the chapter house and the armarium of the convent buildings reconstructed in 1756 have been preserved on the agricultural land. The gate house from the 12th century, flanked by the stranger's chapel from the 13th century, was restored in the 17th century.
