The Marmosoglio Monastery ( Santa Maria di Marmosoglio or Marmosolium) is a former Cistercian abbey in the Lazio region , Italy . It was in the territory of the Diocese of Velletri . The exact location is not known. The area of Cisterna di Latina is given (without evidence) .
history
In 1167 the monastery, which already existed in 1152, was settled by a group of monks from Fossanova Monastery . It thus belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The monastery provided several bishops. Marmosoglio is still documented as a Cistercian monastery in 1373. The apostolic chamber estimated the monastery to have an annual income of 40 guilders. After 1373 there are no more references to the monastery. The dissolution is dated (without evidence) to 1396. The monastery Valvisciolo in Sermoneta is ascribed to the abbey as a subsidiary monastery (widely differing information on the foundation, abolished in 1807, repopulated in 1864, probably not Cistercian until the 14th or 15th century and previously a Templar settlement ) with a facade in the Cistercian style, but there are also other derivations than to find from Marmosoglio Monastery.
Plant and buildings
The monastery complex has completely disappeared.
