The Ostrov Monastery (Czech Ostrovský klášter or Ostrov u Davle , Latin Insula ) was a Benedictine monastery in Bohemia founded in 999 . The ruined monastery is located southwest of Davle and about 20 kilometers south of Prague on the Vltava island of St. Kilian in the Czech Republic .

history

The monastery Insula (Ostrov is the Czech word for island) consecrated to John the Baptist was established in 999 by Boleslav II on an island of the Vltava above the confluence of the Sázava to colonize the area. The monastery was founded by monks from the Niederaltaich monastery . It was possibly built in the border area between the Premyslids and the Slavnikids .

On the rocky spur between the Vltava and Sázava, the monks build the settlement Sekanka (later Hradištko ), which formed the economic basis for the monastery.

The monastery maintained provosts in Sankt Johann and on the Velíz .

In the power struggles after the death of Ottokar II. Přemysl , the monastery and the settlement of Sekanka were destroyed in 1278 by the Brandenburg troops of Otto IV .

While the monastery was rebuilt, Sekanka remained desolate. It is believed that instead of Sekanka, the monks developed Davle as a new economic and trade center. In 1381 the monastery was looted again and in 1403 it burned down.

On August 14, 1420, the Hussites looted and destroyed the monastery. After the Hussite Wars, some monks again moved into the monastery, but the complex remained in ruins and fell into disrepair. It was finally given up completely in 1517, when the last monks moved the Sankt Johann provost house.

Archaeological excavations

The Sekanka monastery and settlement have been extensively archaeologically examined. Today the foundation walls are preserved. When the Vltava floods in 2002 , the ruins of the third oldest monastery in Bohemia were flooded and damaged.
