The monastery Rettel in Rettel at the Moselle in the Moselle department was an important centuries Benedictine , since the 15th century a Carthusian monastery of the Carthusian in Lorraine .

history

In the year 800 Effetia, a daughter of Charlemagne , who had her residence in the nearby Haute-Kontz , founded a Benedictine abbey in Rettel. In 1431 Carthusians took over the abbey from the nearby Marienfloss monastery in Sierck-les-Bains , which was wealthy but in a state of 'secular decadence'. During the Huguenot Wars , the monastery complex was looted by troops from the city of Metz in 1590 . In 1665 Rettel was burned down again.

In the second quarter of the 18th century, a new building was built based on the model of the Bosserville Charterhouse , which was itself founded by Rettel in the 17th century. Construction was completed around 1740. In the course of the French Revolution , the Rettel Carthusian monastery was closed in 1792 and the buildings were auctioned for demolition. After that, Dominican women set up a monastery in the ruins of the Charterhouse. After severe destruction in the Second World War in 1944, the monastery was finally given up.

investment

There are no structural indications of the original Carolingian monastery today. The few remaining building remains and, above all, an engraving from the 18th century give a reliable picture of the baroque Carthusian monastery today: the single-nave church had a facade with monumental columns facing the Moselle, flanked by castle-like monastery wings. Behind it was the large rectangular cloister with the monastery garden and the monks' individual houses. Only the remains of the side wings of the monastery and some of the foundations are preserved.
