The Chartreuse de Bosserville is a former Charterhouse of the Carthusian Order near Art-sur-Meurthe on the Meurthe at the gates of Nancy in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in Lorraine .

history

The monastery, settled by Carthusians from Rettel , was founded in 1632 by Duke Charles IV of Lorraine, who was buried here after his death in 1697. The monastery was originally founded in Laxou , but moved to Art-sur-Meurthe in 1666 after a witch trial against Melchior de la Vallée. Giovanni Betto took over together with Cl.-Th. Gentillâtre took over the construction management from 1666. The church was consecrated in 1712 and the monastery was completed in 1731. After it was abolished in 1792, Carthusians resided in Bosserville from 1835 to 1905, and they maintained a seminary here. Today the former monastery houses a Catholic private high school.

investment

Bosserville is one of the best preserved Baroque Carthusian monasteries in France. The symmetrical layout with a central nave monastery church with castle-like wings to the face side, with terrace and staircase to the banks of the Meurthe, forming a total of 130 m wide facade, was präformativ for other Carthusian monasteries in the region ( monastery Karthaus , Monastery Rettel ). The church facade with its monumental two-storey Ionic-Corinthian column arrangement is a reduction of the classic French three-story arrangement (Doric-Ionic-Corinthian; cf. Saint-Gervais in Paris). A heavy console cornice on Corinthian pilasters dominates the interior of the church ; the original equipment was lost after the French Revolution . At the rear is the spacious rectangular cloister with the monks' individual houses.
