Santa Maria di Mirteto Monastery (1227)

The monastery of San Michele alla Verruca was a Benedictine - then Vallombrosan - and finally Cistercian monk abbey in Tuscany , Italy . It was 12 km from Pisa in the province of the same name on the Verruca hill in Monte Pisano, 440 m above sea level.

history

The monastery, first mentioned in 861, was originally founded by Benedictines , then passed to the Vallombrosans and came to the Cistercians in 1263 as a subsidiary of the Abbey of San Galgano , which also sent a convent. So it belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . Even before the Cistercians moved into Pisa, the monastery acquired the church of San Nicola with an attached hospice, which, however, gave it to the Augustinians in 1296 , and in return the church of Sant'Ermete in the eastern suburb of Pisa, called "dell'Orticaia" has been. In 1432 the monastery was completely destroyed. Towards the end of the 14th century, the monastery of Santa Maria di Mirteto was incorporated, which could no longer sustain itself. The abbots of Verruca Monastery were already living in Sant'Ermete at that time. In 1471 the monastery acquired that of San Benedetto di Portonorio. However, Verruca monastery was probably closed in the 15th century, which no longer appears when the Italian Cistercian congregation was founded in 1497.

Plant and buildings

A photo of the excavations from 1998 roughly shows the floor plan of the monastery. After that, the cloister was to the right of the church, which was irregular to the cloister.
