The Monastery of Santa Maria del Galeso (Galesium) is a former Cistercian abbey in the region Apulia , Italy . It was around 3 to 4 km from Taranto in the province of the same name on the banks of the Galesus river, which flows into the Mar Piccolo .

history

In 1169 Archbishop Gerardo consecrated a church built in honor of the Madonna on Galeso. This was given to the Cistercians in 1195 with sufficient basic equipment and was taken over by a convent from the Sambucina monastery . Thus the monastery belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The newly built monastery is described as grand and outstanding (grandioso e insigne). It had two cloisters. In 1233 the abbey had to return some of its furnishings to the church of San Pietro in Taranto. In 1382 or 1392 the monastery perished as such when it was turned into a small fort during the dispute over the Crown of Naples . As a result, it was partially destroyed by artillery fire. The Cistercians never returned. Except for the church, which was restored in 1918, the monastery has completely disappeared. The abbey property remained in the usufruct of the commendatary abbots until 1780 and then passed to the diocesan seminary.

Plant and buildings

Only the small, single-nave, cross-rib vaulted church has survived, the substance of which probably dates from pre-Cistercian times.
