Enzo Bianchi, the founder of the community

The community of Bose is a religious community in Bose, a district of the municipality Magnano in the Italian province of Biella , in which men and women from different Christian churches lead a monastic life according to the evangelical counsels : celibacy , fraternal community of goods and obedience to the gospel and the needs of the community. The founder of the community is the layman Enzo Bianchi , who directed it as prior until 2017 . The community elected Luciano Manicardi as his successor.

Since it was founded in 1965, the Bose Fellowship has promoted intensive ecumenical dialogue between the various Christian churches and faiths.

history

The community came into being on December 8, 1965, after the Second Vatican Council , when Enzo Bianchi decided to live alone in a house open to guests near the Bose farmhouses. The first confreres came three years later, including a woman and a Protestant pastor.

On November 17, 1967, the Bishop of Biella Carlo Rossi decreed the interdict because of the presence of non-Catholics in the community, but through the intercession of Cardinal Michele Pellegrino the interdict was lifted a year later. The same Cardinal Pellegrino, Archbishop of Turin , approved the monastic rule on April 22, 1973 on the occasion of the vows of the first six brothers. The Bishop of Biella Gabriele Mana recognized on June 29, 2010 the acquisition of legal personality according to canon law and approved some changes to the statutes and the monastery rules.

The community consists of about 85 men and women, some of them Protestants of different denominations and some Orthodox .

In addition to the original headquarters, the community also established offices in Jerusalem , Ostuni , Assisi , San Gimignano and Civitella San Paolo .

In December 2019 and January 2020 there was a Vatican visitation in which the community was asked about intra-community problems. As a result of the ensuing disagreements, four members, including Enzo Bianchi, the founder of the community, were ordered by the Vatican to leave the monastery and the community. To control the further development Amedeo Cencini was appointed by the Pope as a delegate of the community.

Community life

The brothers and sisters in Bose follow the coenobitic life according to the teachings of St. Pachomios , Basil and Benedict , which consists of prayer and work. The only mission of the fellowship is to live the teachings of Jesus Christ .

All members of the community work and earn what they need to live. The main activities are:

  • the care of the fruit and vegetable garden
  • the manufacture of ceramic objects
  • the production of icons using traditional methods
  • the joinery
  • publishing and printing with the publication of the books of the community in the edition Qiqajon
  • Biblical interpretation and catechesis as a service to the community and local churches.

Some monks have a job outside of the community that they bring in line with the rhythm of prayer and community life.

The life of the community is strictly regulated. In the morning, at noon and in the evening the liturgical prayers are held, during which the psalms are sung by the monks and nuns in choir. Manual work is done, the scriptures and the texts of the fathers of western and eastern monasticism are studied. Pilgrims and people in search of God are accepted. Indeed, there are many people asking to join the community, especially at certain times of the year, such as summer.

In addition to the community prayers, which take place three times a day, there is personal prayer, especially the afternoon lectio divina , which is also given to the guests by a member of the community.

On Saturday evening the community and guests take part in the community vigil, during which they listen to the biblical texts of the following Sunday, and the prior or one of the monks helps to grasp the meaning of these texts.
