Block brake
Block brakes are a braking system that is mainly used in rail vehicles or older bicycles , carriages , wagons and carts .
When the shoe brake is either via a brake linkage or a pneumatic or hydraulic device, a brake pad pressed against the movable member. Often the brake pad presses directly on the running surface of wheels , e.g. B. in rail freight cars . In recent models of the pad is no longer made of metal , but of a synthetic resin - composite material .
On older bicycles and scooters , a rubber stamp braked directly on the tread. However, block brakes on bicycles are considered out of date due to their inadequate and fluctuating braking performance (see also: bicycle brakes ).
