The sticking point is a point of land in the West Antarctic Marie Byrd Land . It forms the end of a flattened ridge that in turn marks the northern end of the Long Hills in the Horlick Mountains .
The United States Geological Survey mapped them based on their own surveys and aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1958 to 1960. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them after Joseph Val Knack (1932-2010), a meteorologist on the Byrd station in the year 1958.
