history
1880 founded Anna and Michael Knauber a grocery store in Bonn-Endenich and sold there housewares, feed and fuels. In 1901 the sons Karl and Josef took over the family business and founded the company "Gebrüder Knauber". In 1923 Knauber opened the first gas station in the Rhineland under the name "Westtank". In 1951, under Carl Ernst Knauber, the third generation of the family entered the liquefied gas business. The energy supply was expanded to include heating oil in 1954 . In 1960, the expansion of the fuel trade and the expansion of the filling station network followed. In 1968 Knauber opened the first hobby market in Bonn. In the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, the branch network of Knauber leisure markets in the Cologne / Bonn region developed from this . From 1990 the distribution of liquefied gas was established in East Germany (until 1997) and later also in Croatia (until 2004) and in Poland (until 2010). In 1990, Ines Knauber-Daubenbüchel became the fourth generation to join the company and in 2000 took over the management of the company as managing partner. In 2001 the holding company Carl Knauber Holding GmbH & Co. KG was founded and Knauber Mineralöl, Knauber Gas and Knauber Freizeit were gradually established as independent subsidiaries of the holding company . In 2005 Knauber Contracting was founded , and in 2009 the Estella KochLust branch in Cologne was opened . This was followed by the expansion of the energy division with the offer of natural gas for private and commercial customers. Knauber Freizeit and Estella KochLust have been running online shops since 2013 . In 2013 Estella KochLust opened a second branch in Münster . In 2015 Knauber expanded the product portfolio to include electricity from 100 percent hydropower. The two branches of Estella KochLust in Cologne and Münster as well as the online shop ceased operations in July 2016.
At the end of March 2020, the management of Knauber KG announced the handover of its stores to the Swiss Bauhaus AG on July 1, 2020. Knauber KG intends to concentrate on trading and services in the energy sector in the future.
