Knaupsholz granite

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Knaupsholz granite was mined in today's Harz National Park in Knaupsholz in Wernigerode between the Drei Annen Hohne settlement and the Schierke district , one kilometer east of the Schierke train station in Saxony-Anhalt, over many decades. The Knaupsholz granite was " one of the most important stones of the former GDR for a long time ".

Mineral inventory

The Knaupsholz granite is gray-red in color and coarse-grained. It contains 33.5 percent quartz , 45.9 percent alkali feldspar , 15.1 percent plagioclase , 4.8 percent biotite and chlorite and 0.7 percent ore minerals such as magnetite , pyrite , hematite and 0.7 accessories . The alkali feldspar crystals can be up to 18 mm in size.

The yield in the Knaupsholz quarry is 10–20 percent saw blocks and 80 percent mining rubble. True-to-size, large rough blocks can be obtained.

There are two types of Knaupsholz granite for natural stone work , Knaupsholz red and Knaupsholz beige .

Technical characteristics

The Knaupsholz granite is frost-resistant, the bulk density is 2.59 t / m³ and the compressive strength is 161 MPa.

History of the quarry

The quarry was put into operation around 1903 right next to the Brocken Railway, built in 1898 . At the quarry there was a siding to the Harz Cross Railway and the extraction and processing took place with manual stone splitting tools . The stone material was transported to the Brocken Railway with tipping lorries on two lanes. In 1937 a new quarry site was opened up and the work pieces were processed in Wernigerode. From 1939 the quarry was connected to the electrical network, so machines could be used. A derrick crane was set up for loading and lifted loads of up to five tons.

With the end of the Second World War in May 1945, the quarry was stopped for a short time and reopened on June 1, 1945. The expropriation followed on November 5, 1945. Another derrick crane and machines were used in the quarry and the transport problems were tackled with a cable crane. The Knaupsholz granite was one of the most important stones in the GDR.

After the fall of the Wall, the quarry was bought up. In the meantime it has been shut down.
