Knepp Castle is a medieval castle ruins west of the village West Grinstead in the English administrative unit of West Sussex . It is close to the Adur and the A24 motorway. The name is said to be derived from the Old English "cnæp" (German / English: " Mound ").

history

The castle was originally a moth built by William de Braose in the 12th century . In 1214 it was rebuilt in stone with a two-story donjon at the behest of King Johann Ohneland . Not only Johann Ohneland visited the castle afterwards, but also other kings like Heinrich III. 1218, Eduard II. 1324 and Richard II. 1384. Subsequently, however, the castle fell into disrepair. Most of it was destroyed in the 1720s. In the early 19th century, their remains were re-fortified for Sir Charles Burrell to protect them from further deterioration.

construction

The castle stands on an oval mound that was raised on a natural hill and is surrounded by a moat and curtain walls. The moat is fed by a nearby pond and still had water at the beginning of the 18th century.

Today the remains of the castle consist of its single wall, which is 11 meters high, 9.5 meters long and 2.5 meters thick. It has an entrance and another opening above it. This wall obviously formed the northern end of the western wall of a tower or donjon.

Country house

The neighboring neo-Gothic country house , which Sir Charles Merrick Burrell had built according to plans by John Nash at the beginning of the 19th century , also bears the name "Knepp Castle" .
