West Grinstead is a village and a civil parish in the Horsham District in West Sussex , England . It is about six kilometers northwest of Henfield . The Adur River flows through the municipality.

history

In the western municipal area is the former mound castle Knepp Castle , which was built around 1100 by William de Braose, 1st Baron of Braose or his son Philip . In 1214 King Johann extended the castle by another floor and fortified the entire complex. The castle was completely destroyed during the Battle of Knepp between King Johann's son Heinrich and rebellious farmers in the region. King John, who himself was not present during the battle, later returned and took revenge on the rebels.

Attractions

St. George's parish church was built around 1100 and is the house of worship for the Anglican parish of West Grinstead. There is also the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation , a church built in 1876 that is used by the Roman Catholic community.

In addition, the Downs Link cycle path offers good hiking opportunities through the South Downs .
