The Bielefeld district was a district (also called arrondissement or sub-prefecture) in the French vassal state of Westphalia, which existed from 1807 to 1813 . Until 1811 the district was part of the department of the Weser , then until its dissolution in 1813 part of the department of the Fulda . The sub-prefecture was in the city of Bielefeld .
location
The district was located in the northwest of the Kingdom of Westphalia, initially in the south of the Weser department, from 1811 in the north of the Fulda department, south of the Wiehengebirge and on both sides of the Teutoburg Forest . The largest cities were Bielefeld and Herford .
The area was in what is now the North Rhine-Westphalian districts of Herford and Gütersloh (northern part), as well as the independent city of Bielefeld.
structure
The district was delimited by Royal Decree of December 24, 1807 and divided into eleven cantons. Nine of the eleven cantons were divided into two municipalities each due to their large population . In 1807 the district had 91,802 inhabitants.

In 1811 the department of the Weser was dissolved and the north-western part was incorporated into the French Empire. The Bielefeld district was greatly reduced in size in the course of this reorganization, lost almost 40,000 inhabitants and was incorporated into the Fulda department. All areas northwest of a line Weser - Werre - Aa / Johannisbach - Schwarzbach were separated from the Bielefeld district and partly from the Minden district (cantons Bünde minus southern parts, Enger plus parts canton Schildesche, Werther plus parts canton Halle), partly the district of Osnabrück (Canton Versmold) (both arrondissements from 1811 part of the department of the Upper Ems ). Brockhagen rose to the canton capital. The district now had 50,597 inhabitants in seven cantons, all of which again formed only one municipality and were made up as follows:
Further development
In 1813, the district was largely integrated into the Prussian civil government between the Weser and Rhine and from 1816 onwards it essentially formed the central part of the Minden administrative district : the entire Bielefeld district , the south-eastern part of the Herford district and the Halle (Westphalia) district in part.
