Peter "Kniri" Knaus (* 3. March 1945 in Aarau ) is a Swiss jazz - and blues - musicians . He is active in various jazz bands with trombone, harmonica (blues harp) and Cajun accordion.

Live and act

Kniri Knaus has been touring with various jazz and blues bands since 1960. Under the influence of New Orleans trombonists, Kniri Knaus found an independent way of playing that is rooted in the tradition of New Orleans jazz . Since 1965 he has also been using the blues harp in the style of Sonny Boy Williamson .

Since 1961 he has been a member of the Aarau “River Street Jazz Band”, with which he plays in the traditional New Orleans style. In the 1960s he also played in Pepe Lienhard's Big Band , with whom he appeared twice at the Zurich Jazz Festival . In the following years he was also active in rhythm & blues and soul . In 1968 he won the Swiss “Rhythm & Blues Festival” with the group “etc”. From 1967 to 1969 he was one of the "JazzBandits"; In 1972 he played with the jazz rock group "Relief" from Prague.

From 1974 to 1981 he worked as a semi-professional musician in the formation Pfuri, Gorps & Kniri , with whom he appeared at international festivals such as the Roskilde Festival in Denmark and several times at the Montreux Jazz Festival as well as several times on television and the feature film “Pfuri, Gorps & Kniri in the Hotel ”and performed at the Eurovision Song Contest 1979 in Jerusalem.

Since 1974 Kniri Knaus has also played the blues on the Schwyzerörgeli .

From 1983 to 1988 he was increasingly active in the blues area with the group "Rolls Noise" and "Kniris Crazy Blues Band". He was on tour with these groups outside of Switzerland. After these bands broke up, he can now be found more and more in the New Orleans jazz scene.

Since 1990 he has also been using Cajun Accordions. Between 2000 and 2003 he developed his own regular diatonic tone division for the hand organ, which allows playing the blues in a simple way on a 10-button, single-row hand organ in 5 keys (so-called "bluesörgeli").

Today he is active in the following bands: “Riverstreet Jazzband” (Aarau CH), “Bourbonstreet Jazzband” (Lucerne CH), “Dr. Wim's Jazz Affair "(Freiburg D)," Small Town Kids OldTime Jazzband "(Nebikon CH). Since 2013 Kniri Knaus has been playing together with Pfuri Baldenweg and Zach Prather in the band “Grand Cannon”.
