Life

Hilda Karolina Amalia Knobloch was born in the Lower Styrian town of Marburg (now Maribor in Slovenia ) in 1880 . Her father Gustav Knobloch taught as a teacher at the local state high school, her mother Mathilde, nee Schram, was a housewife.

Hilda initially attended the girls' elementary school in Marburg. In the fifth grade, she met Margarete Glantschnigg , who was the same age , and shared the school desk with her. The intimate friendship between the two girls was to last for life. In the middle of 1891 the Knobloch family moved to Vienna . Here Hilda attended the town school . During this time she came into contact with the stage world as an avid theater-goer. In 1895 the father was called back to his former place of work as the Realschule director, as a result of which the parents returned to Marburg with her.

Hilda Knobloch had already completed the public school in Vienna. Here in Marburg, she took private lessons in English and in 1901, despite a serious and protracted illness, passed the state examination to become a language teacher for English. After the father's retirement, the family moved to Graz in 1907 and moved into an apartment on Schillerplatz. Here Hilda Knobloch started writing on the advice of her friend Margarete Glantschnigg. At first she wrote newspaper bulletins, later she also published novels, short stories, and poems in children's and youth magazines.
