Salzburg node from the southeast

The Salzburg junction is a motorway junction in the state of Salzburg , which connects the Austrian motorways West Autobahn  (A1) and Tauern Autobahn  (A10) , with the latter having its starting point there. The node is located in the southwest of the state capital Salzburg in the municipal area of Wals-Siezenheim . Just a good two kilometers west of it, the West Autobahn A1 merges at the Walserberg border crossing into the German Federal Autobahn 8 , which continues to Rosenheim with the junction to the Inntal Autobahn (A12) to Innsbruck , and behind Rosenheim to Munich . The area from the Salzburg junction to Rosenheim and on to Tyrol is known as the Great German Corner .

Design

The motorway junction is a motorway triangle, which has the triangle shape (also called Y). The carriageway continuous in the triangle forms the West Autobahn A 1, whereby it runs from west to north and thus leads in a curve through the junction. The Tauern Autobahn A 10 begins at the Salzburg junction at kilometer 0 and continues in a south-easterly direction and then in a southerly direction to Villach.

Due to border controls on the Walserberg, long backlogs in the south and far beyond the Salzburg junction were and are not infrequently formed. In such cases, in order to give traffic from the Tauern motorway towards Vienna the opportunity to continue driving as soon as possible, the two lanes towards Salzburg Mitte and Vienna separate from those towards Germany one and a half kilometers before the actual junction and run parallel to them.
