Ko Hyeong-ryeol (born November 8, 1954 in Haenam ) is a South Korean poet .

Life

Ko Hyeong-ryeol was born on November 8, 1954 in Haenam city, on the southern tip of the Korean peninsula, and grew up in Sokcho , Gangwon-do . After graduating from high school, he worked as a civil servant in his community. He made his literary debut in 1979 with his poem The First Born ( 장자 ), which was published in the magazine Zeitgenössische Literatur ( 현대 문학 ).

Some of his critics refer to him as a poet with a 'strange' voice. His voice seems suppressed and hesitant, as if in a monologue, even when it brings up topics such as the problematic Korean history, the division of the country or the burning desire for reunification . Though never strenuous, Ko's poetry exudes the strength of compassion and warmth. These feelings are based on his own view of the world, which is not that of a distant observer but rather that of a direct neighbor who views all things as if they were a direct part of his life. As Ko grew up as a poet, the tone of his voice became even more humble and unadulterated. Even while lamenting the world with sorrow and suffering, he manages to embrace life with compassion and understanding.

Ko was awarded the Chihun Literature Prize in 2003.
