occupation

Kod Adı KOZ is a Turkish action film produced by Parantez Yapım from 2015. The film is about an underground organization whose nationwide takeover of power under the keyword “Köstebek Operasyonu Zamanı” (abbreviated “KOZ”, translated “Time for Operation Mole”) is imminent and against which the Prime Minister defends himself with his government and the judiciary. Although the film claims not to be based on real events and not to deal with any actual persons or organizations, it is often viewed by critics as a propaganda film in the run-up to the upcoming parliamentary elections . On the official website the aim of the film is stated to be "to uncover the real face of the public enemies". The film is aimed primarily at a Turkish audience, but was also shown in some German cinemas from February 26, 2015, where it was given the additional German title “Code-Name: Operation Maulwurf”.

action

In 2013, the Kod Adı KOZ organization had its helpers across the country in a wide variety of sectors of public life. These helpers include the journalist Zafer, the deputy chief of police Remzi and a teacher who cannot escape the network even abroad. Thus, the organization tries to expand its influence on politics, the media and the financial world. The group wants to weaken the power of political personalities enormously by attempting coups and uprisings and uses radical methods. The prime minister defends himself against the rebellious activities and puts himself in danger of being murdered.

reception

Alev Scott sees the film in her review, which appeared in The National , as so close to the events of the corruption scandal in 2013 that it almost amounts to defamation. The actors were apparently chosen specifically because of their similarity to real persons irrespective of acting ability, so some of them dubbed be had. Accordingly, the antagonist is associated with Fethullah Gülen and the Gülen movement named after him , which, with the help of his followers and the support of American and British secret services , is trying to build a parallel state in order to destroy the Turkish state.

In the daily newspaper Today's Zaman, which is closely related to the Gülen movement, Emine Yıldırım classifies the film as a pure propaganda film regardless of the plot or technical qualities. Yıldırım clearly sees AKP sympathizers behind the film who want to discredit the Gülen movement. Yıldırım is particularly offended that two other Turkish films could not start in the same week because too many cinemas were reserved for Kod Adı KOZ. Rüdiger Suchsland from SWR also classifies the film as a “propaganda film of an openness and directness”, “as has not been seen in this country since very dark times”. Suchsland sees the film steeped in wild conspiracy theories, such as the fear that England and the British Queen “want to establish a rule over Islam”. Murat Özer from the film magazine Arka Pencere doesn't see anything bad about making a bad propaganda film, but this film put the parallel power structure with the Gezi movement in a sack. Özer also draws a parallel to Leni Riefenstahl , since the character of the Prime Minister was badly idealized and presented in a very "soft" way and so has nothing in common with Erdoğan's person . In the Hürriyet , Uğur Vardan put together ten scenes which, from his point of view, represent the peak of surreality. Vardan compares viewing these scenes with a journey through a parallel universe and then establishes a reference to the real background. For example, the Prime Minister's quote in the eighth scene discussed, “I gave the order”, corresponds to a quote from Erdoğan in June 2013 at Gezi Park .

The radical reported that the producers were hoping the box office -record the film Recep İvedik 4 to break, but this is just 127,743 tickets sold would amount to a miracle in the first three days. After the first weekend in the cinemas, there were free tickets for a week to increase the number of visitors.

According to a Sabah report , the film was shown to police officers and their families in Adana , who enjoyed the film very much.

In the IMDb , the film replaced Saving Christmas as the worst film of all time on February 25, 2015 and held this status until July 9, 2015. From October 9, 2015, it was back in first place until it was pushed to second place on March 4, 2017 by the also Turkish film Reis .
