The Kogaluk River is a 52 km long river in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .

River course

The Kogaluk River forms the outflow of Cabot Lake , which is an 18 km long river broadening. The course of the river above the lake was formerly part of the Kogaluk River. Today the upper course is called " Head Brook ".

The Kogaluk River leaves Cabot Lake at its eastern end. It flows 40 km in an easterly direction. In doing so, it cuts through the hill country of the Canadian Shield . For the last 10 km it gradually turns north. The Kogulak River finally flows 37 km south of the settlement of Nain into Voisey's Bay , a bay on the east coast of the Labrador Peninsula . 6.4 km above the mouth there is a 9.2 m high waterfall. This prevents migratory fish from rising from the sea into the river system. The Side Brook , the main tributary, meets the Kogaluk River from the right 4 km above the mouth.

Hydrology

The Kogaluk River drains an area of 5434 km². The mean discharge 9 km above the mouth is 98.6 m³ / s. The water surface of the river freezes in winter. The highest runoffs occur during the snowmelt in late spring. The month with the highest discharge is June with an average of 384 m³ / s.
