The Wodzicki coal mine was one of several shafts of the mine in Fohnsdorf for the extraction of lignite in the municipality of Fohnsdorf in the Murtal district in Styria . A mining museum was established. The Wodzicki shaft and part of the machine hall are under monument protection .

history

The headframe above the former Wodzicki shaft was built in 1887 and enlarged in 1925.

In 1940 water penetrated the main shaft during sinking work, which made extensive damming work necessary.

On August 6, 1943, there was a firedamp explosion in the Karl-August-Schacht , in which 100 miners were killed.

The mine was closed in 1978 and demolished except for the headframe and part of the machine hall of the Wodzicki main shaft, in which a mining museum was opened in 1983.
