history

After the ban on Jews from staying in Styria was lifted , Jewish families settled in Fohnsdorf , Judenburg , Knittelfeld , Obdach and Zeltweg in the second half of the 19th century and created small religious communities in Judenburg and Knittelfeld that set up a prayer room and cemeteries. During the Nazi era , many Jews were expelled or murdered and the places of worship destroyed. Few Jews returned to this area after 1945.

The Israelite cemetery in Fohnsdorf was built in 1873 by the Jewish community of Judenburg and in 1942 it was devastated by local Nazi units during the Nazi era, as a result of which many tombstones ( Mazewa ) were destroyed. All five existing Israelite cemeteries in Styria were "Aryanized" and in some cases completely destroyed.

In 1948, two survivors temporarily re-established a Chewra Kadisha and tried to have the gravestones found at local stonemasons returned. The cemetery is currently being maintained privately. A tour of the cemetery is possible, a key is available from the municipal office in Fohnsdorf.
